Artist Statement

The NIU Anime Association was the first organization I joined when I came to NIU, and it is very special to me. Ever since I became an executive officer, I created works for this organization for promotional purposes to increase our numbers ever since we came back on campus from Covid. Additionally, our organization wanted to bring back one of our biggest events, Karoshi-con. Karoshi-con is a one-day free anime convention held in the NIU Holmes Student Center. I was one of the few people taught how to plan and run this huge event. Throughout the Spring semester of 2024, I created works for Karoshi-con. These works were mostly used for promotional or financial gain for the organization. Prior to creating these works, I designed a humanoid version of our mascot, which is the panda. Each year Karoshi-con holds a different theme. I wanted my artworks to reflect these themes to my audience. This year’s Karoshi-con theme was Cherry Blossom. I made sure cherry blossoms were incorporated throughout each piece. In addition to those works, I wanted to portray the growth and success of Karoshi-con event by representing them as magazine covers. This is to help inform my audience of the previous themes as well as portray the relative idea of many people came to the event each year.
