Animation

Artist Statement

I'm inspired by ancient history, and my work explores the middle ages through the eyes of the Vikings. I wanted to demonstrate what it feels like to live in this unknown era, where long boat battles were taking place in harsh environments. The piece combines a historical past and a cartoonish style design inspired by Pixar films. I’m passionate about working with 3D designs and animation. Although the short is simple, my frame-by-frame motion allowed me to focus on aspects of the animation flow. My art process was rough; I was inspired by the time period, location, and mood and developed that narrative with it. I unitized Zbrush to create my 3D models and Maya for rigging and animation. Exploration is a 3D short with a semi-realistic character and world that displays a simple story with complex cinematography and has a realistic animation, detailed textured environment, and aspects of an animated film.

Ricardo Ballesteros is a three-dimensional animator, designer, and photographer who was born in Aurora, IL, and currently lives near the Chicago area. His interest came from his favorite animated films of all time, Toy Story and Finding Nemo. He holds a BFA in Time Arts from Northern Illinois University, where he is currently pursuing a minor in Computer Science. He works on creating 3D animated short films and video games that reimagine historical events that occurred in history. I currently have three achievements in photography, none in my medium, but I am exploring competitions in animation and video game creation. His latest piece is a 3D animated short, which is inspired by the Viking era.
