Artist’s Statement

I am a black illustrator who primarily builds their works within a digital format. My goal is to openly convey my creative passions--much of which relates to the Black American Experience. As a young artist, I focus on creating works that insert representation in a fun and thoughtful way. By drawing pieces that surround the idea of blackness being celebrated and embraced, I hope to promote the integration of black models for live drawing, the integration of black teachers in creative environments, and the overall integration of the black experience in art.

In my artistic endeavors, I explore black-centered ideas that not only portray the human form, but also the essence of black culture itself as it relates to trends and products. As a result, my art presents the features of my culture in an imaginative way, to evoke a sense of belonging to those who view it.

About the Artist

Myel Simmons is a Chicago-based illustrator, born and raised. Much like many other creatives, Myel’s passion for art has been present from the very beginning. Her interest in illustration was fueled largely by her love for animations as a child. After realizing that there were people behind the works she adored, Myel decided she wanted to do the same.

Throughout her four years at NIU, Myel was able to explore many means and mediums to show off her passion and reflect her interests. She now focuses on creating work that reflects who she is, as well as her culture. Today, Myel can confidently say that she has achieved the illustrative prowess she’s been yearning for since 2011.
