Artist Statement

My work is an authentic reflection of my experience, whether that be my upbringing, my views, or what I find beauty in. I create characters I would’ve liked to see as a child who was entranced by the beauty of animation. I love to use a variety of different emotions to reflect the complexity of each character. Mid-Century concept art has been a big influence on my art for its rich colors and textures. My interest in fashion, storytelling, and art history have also influenced my art. The purpose of my work is to create characters that everyone can resonate with.

Samantha Magallanes is a Digital Illustrator from Elk Grove Village, Illinois. She is graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Illustration. Even though her work is mainly done digitally, she also likes using acrylic paint to explore textures that are unique to traditional mediums.

Her main focus in illustration is in character design and children's book illustration. Samantha was born into a huge family tree, full of characters with their own unique personalities, that have influenced her work in a multitude of ways. She loves to use exaggeration, drama, and body language in her character designs so that their look tells a story without any text.

Animators and Concept Artists like Mary Blair, Don Bluth, and Eyvind Earle have been huge sources of inspiration for Samantha for their contribution to the magic of 2-D animation.
