Entering Another World
I believe art is the closest thing we have to magic. The ability of a piece to tell a story is infinite, controlled only by the whims of the artist. When it comes to making magic, my goals change depending on the purpose of the piece, but I like to portray snapshots- voyeuristic moments in time that feel real and familiar, but tell a story suggesting more than meets the eye. The stories I want to tell are of quiet moments among the extraordinary, casual scenes set in strange places and strange times. They often feature women- a class that often operates silently, the ugly or odd side going unseen, and in my opinion, unappreciated. I also enjoy working with design, particularly outfit and character design.
I find the concept of interpretation fascinating, particularly intended versus blind interpretation of art. My pieces are, like anything, open to interpretation- but I also like to push how much of my audience's interpretation I can predict or influence. I want to know what my audience thinks is going on as much as possible, including what is ambiguous or strange, as I want to truly think through every eventuality and put as much meaning into my work as possible. I think there is value in every aspect of a piece, and that even if we can’t see it, our minds register things that are out of place. More than this, I believe that subtleties are essential to truly elevating art. It’s what makes things magical. Whether the mood of the piece is whimsical or visceral, I never want the viewer to be able to fully describe why they’re feeling what they’re feeling- only that they’re feeling it.
