Artist Statement

As a character-based artist, I love to create “new lives” to live within the stories and worlds I construct. I work mostly in 3D character designs through traditional and digital sculpting, textile and yarn manipulation, and clay; traditional and digital illustration; and story-based animations. My character designs are most often cutesy animals inspired by the toys I played with and media I consumed as a child, which continue to influence my work to this day. I have been making art for the purpose of happiness and fun since I was only three years old: drawing castles and dragons that sprawled across several loose pieces of printer paper scattered across my floor. Growing up, I was so incredibly encapsulated by stories, cartoons, video games, and toys that they gave me the biggest, most heartwarmingly overwhelming feelings of joy and inspiration to create. Since becoming an adult, I have chosen not to let go of these feelings as many people do; instead choosing to chase and replicate them for myself and others to enjoy.

ARTIST BIO

Emalie Vogeler is a multimedia character artist based in northern Illinois who loves to take inspiration from various toys and childhood themes of imagination and fun. Her favorite and most honed skills are in 3D modeling (whether that be traditionally or digitally), illustration, and animation.

Drawing full scenes of castles and dragons since she was three, Emalie strove to continue this passion through elementary, middle, and lastly high school where she realized that working with art is what she truly longed to do. After winning a few Best of Shows for her sculptural work at high school art exhibitions, she was further motivated to study art, which she would go on to do at Northern Illinois University.

Having had a distinct love of animals growing up, as well as being amazed by anthropomorphized cartoon critters, Emalie’s art is influenced by all sorts of different creatures who are often brought to life in new forms and roles. She is motivated by a drive to create and attempt to invoke happiness, and perhaps nostalgia in some cases, in her consumers and viewers alike.
