Artist Statement

My illustrations are interpretive takes of fictional narrative spaces that fuse the rules of reality and the energy of the imagined. Many of my works begin with my own questions about “how did this situation come to be?”, “what exactly is being experienced here?” and “what will happen afterwards?”, questions I hope to pass on to the viewer as they take in my pieces through their own lens.

I challenge myself to create works out of the joy of experimentation, whether that involves personal work or client-based work. I enjoy incorporating geometric pieces and figurative imagery, infusing them with graphical elements as a striking visual contrast between illustration, typography, and graphic design. I favor a bold composition style highlighted with contrasting colors, with a great deal of emphasis on the concept of the relationship between a subject and the environment around them.

I draw inspiration from art history, mainly the grandiose compositions of neoclassical painters and the ornamental decadence of baroque artists. I am also inspired by all forms of fiction that alter my sense of self and my understanding of the world.

Artist Bio

Angella Kilabo is a Chicago-based illustrator with a passion for the bold, the complex, and the energetic. An enthusiastic learner at heart, Kilabo studied art at length at Harper College, CG Master Academy, and graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Northern Illinois University in the Fall of 2021.

A child of Ugandan immigrants, Kilabo’s first taste for art expressed itself in messy crayons, markers, and paint smeared across the pristine white walls of her mother’s apartment. Over time Kilabo tools upgraded to pencil and paper, inks and charcoals, and programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Kilabo works in a bold combination of the illustrative, figurative, graphical, and geometric. With a great love of linework, contrasting colors, and integrated typography, Kilabo energetically experiments with the fictional and the decorative.
