Senior Project | Subconscious Hoops

Hula hooping has evolved into an art form of it’s own over the recent decades called flow. The flow community is made of a niche group of people, creating a niche market in return. The market for flow toys, hula hoops specifically, have and continue to increase. Due to the market being niche, flow companies usually have around 10 employees and operate their business online. The small businesses operating at large demands has created issues in design like overwhelming websites, lack of packaging, and a lack of visual identity all together- which is specifically a conflict for ecommerce businesses.

For my project, I created my own hula hoop business with it’s own branding, website, packaging, social media marketing, and visual identity.

The goal of my project is to create a business with an ecommerce site easy for users to use and understand, develop packaging for the hoop industry, and introduce a business with overall strong visual identity to this industry.

The strategy of my project is to build trust. Subconscious Hoops would be a new business starting out with short term goals of boosting sales, and long term goals of building trust and a customer base- which go hand in hand. I included some aspects like informing the user about the brand’s values on the homepage, associating the brand with established companies, creating a quiz that directs users to recommended products suited to their needs, never seen before packaging, etc. Every decision made throughout this process was chosen with the foundation of research and customer needs. Enjoy.

Artist Bio

Name: Olivia Lonteen

Major: Visual Communication

Minor: Marketing

Over the years of coursework and through my various internships, I was able to understand how crucial visual identity is for marketing. Through my minor, I was able to learn the needs of a business and then apply that to my major and visually implement it. The area of design I feel the strongest in is branding due to my completed coursework.
